The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is even quieter in the interior than the previous model. The aim of sound insulation was to further improve the discreet noise level. For example, the apertures for the cable grommets in the firewall have double seals. To achieve an engine sound that is perceived as refined and unobtrusive in the interior, the firewall insulation has been extended into the side areas of the A-pillars and the floor area. Mercedes-Benz is also using acoustic foam in certain bodyshell sections for the first time in series production. In this process a special foam is packed into the bodyshell while these areas are still accessible. These foam sections then expand in the oven during cathodic dip painting (CDP). This process has considerably improved sound insulation in the body structure – e.g. sound transmission through the C-pillar. Advances in NVH and Acoustics Virtualization to Maximize Product Reliability, Quality, and Sustainability Abstract: Prediction of structure-borne noise and sound propagation can play important roles in the design of many products. Examples include noise caused by vibrating structural components, transmission of sound through thin panels and the acoustic performance of piezoelectric devices. Solving these types of acoustic wave propagation problems (and many more) can be performed in a coupled way, in which the fluid and structural domains are solved simultaneously, or in an uncoupled way, in which the structural analysis is performed first, followed by the acoustics analysis. Prediction of acoustic performance of products early in the design state and fine-tuning acoustic characters of the final marketable product is increasing important factor for the competitive edge in the design of many common products and structures including speakers, cars, planes, buildings, sonar, and machinery.
