Step By Step Boxing Training for Beginners | Boxing Basics for Beginners at Home. I know that boxing as a sport can be intimidating; especially for beginners, hence I put together this training to help you learn the basics of boxing, step by step. You can quickly determine your dominant hand as it's more than likely the hand you use to write. If you are left-handed, you should stand with your right foot forward and left foot back (also known as the South Paw Stance). On the other hand, if you are right-handed, you should stand with your left foot forward and right foot back (also known as the Orthodox Stance). I am right-handed, so in this video, I'll show you the orthodox stance. When standing, your front foot should be pointing at one o'clock while your back foot is pointing at around two o'clock. The next step is to visualize a line in between the two feet, one foot on either side of the line. You never want to have two feet on the same line. To make this easy, you can draw a straight line between your feet or use tape to mark it down. Another essential tip is to loosen your knees as though you are on a skateboard/ surfboard. You should also have your elbows tucked in, hands up, by the left and right feet respectively. Once you have this boxing stance down, the next step is to work on the basics of movement; When you move forward, you need to step forward with your front foot first regardless of whether you are in orthodox or southpaw stance. On the other hand, whenever you need to move backwards, you should move with your back foot first. The same principle applies when moving left or right, by moving either left foot first or right foot first. This is the basic movement in boxing. After working on the basic movement, we'll need to work on the basic punches. The first punch you'll need to learn is your lead hand/ front hand. I am right-handed, so I'll use my left hand, this punch is called the Jab/ number one. The next punch is number two, in my case, the right hand ( this will be opposite if you are southpaw); remember to exhale as you throw this punch. Note that this part will feel awkward at first but should get better with enough practice. The next step will be adding the combo, which is basically the combination of the (one, two, hook, two punches). I Illustrate how to do this on the video. The combo method is essential as it ensures that as the first punch is coming back, you are already throwing the next punch, no pause in between, giving you an added advantage in boxing sport. In This video, I will show you the 6 common boxing mistakes that beginners do when they are boxing. Do not miss number 6 because it is the most common and by correcting these mistakes you will improve your boxing. The first common mistake I see is dropping your non-punching hand. Always keep your non-punching hand at by your face no matter what punch you are throwing. Common mistake number two is keeping your chin too high. Your chin should be down because if you keep it too high there is a greater chance for you to be hit hard. Common mistake number three is not turning your hips to transfer your weight through the punches. I often see people throwing arm punches. For maximum power in your punches, you have to turn your hip, especially on that cross and the hook as you transfer your weight from the front foot to the back foot. So, keep practising to turn your hips. Common mistake number four is crossing your feet when moving backwards and forward, side to side. When you move to the right move your right foot first and same with moving to the left, forward and back. Often I will see people stepping to the right with their left foot instead of the right foot. Avoid this mistake because it will cause you to get off balance and you won't be able to throw any punches. Common mistake number five is moving flat-footed ( moving around, heel-toe heel-toe). When you are moving back and forth you need to be on your toes because that way you can throw punches and defend yourself no matter where you are. Common mistake number six, the biggest mistake I see beginners and even people who have been boxing for a long time do is breathing. When it comes to boxing or throwing punches it is very common for people to hold their breath. Holding your breast while punching will waste too much of your energy and you will not have speed or power in your punches because you are too tight and too tense. For maximum speed and power, you have to relax and exhale with every punch. Three (3) of the BEST BOXING DRILLS for beginners to do from home with no equipment. In this video FightCamp Trainer Coach PJ breaks down boxing drills so you can start boxing training now. The first drill will be a basic boxing movement, the second drill will be a punch combination, and the third drill will focus on conditioning. Rest for 30 seconds in between each drill. Here’s how it looks: Drill 1: 2 Slips - 2 Rolls - Shuffle Back - Shuffle Forward (repeat for 3 minutes) Drill 2: Punch Combo: Jab - Cross - Lead Hook (repeat for 3 minutes) Drill 3: Pushup Punches, Lunge Punches & Plank Punches (30 seconds each, repeat for 3 minutes) DRILL #1 Slip to lead side - Slip to rear side - Roll to lead - Roll to rear - Shuffle back - Shuffle forward DRILL SET: 3 minutes straight + 30 second rest When you slip you want to imagine your missing the punch just by an inch. When you roll you need to get as low as the punches coming at you. Perfecting these movements can help you become a better fighter. Once this movement gets consistent you can start to pick up the pace a little bit, slipping right into your rolls, right into your movement back and then forward. Keep your hands up at all times. DRILL #2 Shadowboxing Jab Cross Hook Slowly and precisely practice this basic combination. Slowly rotate your hand out and back to your face, rotate your knuckle and turn your hip on your lead hook. Get better at shadowboxing by being more purposeful with every single punch. DRILL SET: 3 minutes straight + 30 second rest DRILL #3 30 seconds - Push up and punch 30 seconds - Lunge punch 30 seconds - Elbow plank punch Here is the breakdown of the movements in the drills above. These basic boxing moves can get you into boxing shape fast. Slip A slip is essentially a head dodge for an incoming strike. The goal of a slip is to move your head just enough to avoid the punch, but not too far that you throw yourself off balance. To perform a slip, bend both your knees slightly and lean your weight towards the side you’d like to slip to. Think of your body as a straight line. When you slip, you’re simply moving to the left or right side of that line, and then returning to center. Roll In one fluid movement, drop down in your boxing stance and shift your weight from one leg to the other. Then rise up, back to a standing position. A perfect roll should have you dropping your body just underneath an oncoming punch and no further. The easiest way to think about executing a roll is to picture yourself making the letter “U” in the air. Shuffle A key component of boxing is always staying light on your feet and ready to move. Move your rear foot one step back and allow your front foot to follow. To shuffle forward, move your front foot one step forward and allow your back foot to follow. Jab Your jab hand should be the same side as your lead foot. Rotate your hand as you extend from your guard into a jab. Your hand to your elbow should be flat as a table, with no bend in the wrist. Rotate your hand back into a guard position almost as soon as you throw it out. Cross Perform the same movement as your jab, but with your rear hand. Be sure to pivot your back foot when you punch so that you can generate power through your hips. Return your hand to a guard position. Lead Hook With your jab hand, you’re going to perform a basic hook. Bend your arm at the elbow and rotate your hips in the same direction you are punching. Execute the strike and return your hand to your guard. Pushup Punches Get down into a pushup position but leave about one foot of space between your feet. Perform a pushup and throw a punch from your pushup position. Alternate hands to ensure both arms get a workout. Lunge Punches Begin in a standing position. Step backward with your foot and drop into a lunge, touching your back knee lightly to the floor. Make sure your front knee stays bent at a near-perfect 90-degree angle, and throw a fully extended punch with the same hand as the leg that you stepped backward with. Return to a standing position and alternate between sides. Plank Punches Start in a plank position. Want to learn how to hit a heavy bag? Here are three quick tips to turn you from chump to champ! :) ►BUY ANDO A PIECE OF PIE: (Thank you!) 🤍 SUMMARY: TIP #1: HANDS DOWN, YOU’RE A CLOWN. Priority #1 is to protect yourself at all times. Even if your punches are sloppy, if you keep your hands up, at least no one can say your defense wasn’t tight! So, don’t drop your hands to wind up your punches and don’t drop your hands after you punch, either. Hands up before, during, and after. TIP #2: FOOTWORK FIRST In grappling, you'll hear the phrase, “Position before submission." Same concept applies to punchingposition first! In a real fight, the other guy is not going to let you wail on him like a heavy bag. You need to use your footwork to close the gap, which means footwork. Put your chin down, bend your knees, and get your hands up. Practice shuffling in, shuffling out, shuffling around, and pivoting. Practice around a static bag then a swinging bag. Get comfortable putting yourself into any position you wish. Once your footwork is warmed up, add your punches back. TIP #3: USE YOUR IMAGINATION If you’re into Karate or Kung Fu, approach the heavy bag the same way you approach a kata—visualize you’re in a real fight. If you’re not into Karate, visualize anyway! Don't treat the heavy bag like a treadmill or barbell—make it personal. Fight one punk or an army of zombies—it doesn't matter, just make sure you imagine something. WHAT ABOUT BAG GLOVES? Yes, protecting your hands is important. But in my experience, most people who put on gloves hit way too hard. Whether you wear gloves or not, here's my advice: focus on working the bag, not killing it. Forget the death blows. You're better off just keeping your hands up, moving in your stance, and thinking your way in and out from the bag. That's it! Now you know how to hit a heavy bag. Start punching and you’ll not only get a great workout, you'll build skills you can use. THANKS FOR WATCHING!
